ok I found the other thread, I'm using the latest version and setting Window > easy save 3 > settings > auto update references | off, worked.

Could everyone who's encountering this issue please let me know the version of Unity they are using? It's looking likely that this is only occurring on specific versions.

joel, i have a test project as small as i could make it. i tried to send it to you in a PM here, but it rejects anything with a .ZIP extension. how else can i give to you?

Unity 2017 3.1p4 (latest release of unity)
Was also happening in previous version release.

Many thanks, it's looking like this is a bug introduced by Unity in 2017.3.
This issue has previously occurred in some versions of 5.6, but they issued a fix which appears to have been undone in 2017.3.

Hi all,
It looks like Unity have fixed this in Unity 2018 (see the bug report:
https://fogbugz.unity3d.com/default.asp ... 58jai699om).
In the meantime, if you're using Unity 2017, you will need to use the fix described in this thread.
